Why you need international medical coverage:
International travel and relocation have become common, if not routine for both groups and individuals from all nationalities. Unfortunately, many travelers are misinformed or unfamiliar with how their primary health insurance plan will actually pay a claim incurred outside the United States. The fact is: Most, if not all, U.S. based health plans don’t provide any of the following services in the event of an emergency abroad:
- 24-hour multilingual Worldwide Services
- Instant physician and hospital referrals anywhere in the World
- Guaranteed payments and coordination of benefits to medical facilities worldwide
- Immediate dispatch and coordination of Emergency Medical Evacuation services (anytime anywhere)
- Repatriation of Remains and Emergency Reunion
- Peace of Mind (all the above services and benefits are included in this plan)
Finally, all United States passports clearly state that persons considering foreign travel should determine what health insurance coverage, if any, they have while outside the United States. It further states that Medicare does not cover health care costs outside the United States (for more information, contact the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs).
Problem for U.S. Travelers: Most group and individual health plans sold in the United States provide limited (if any) coverage while traveling overseas. PPO’s do not extend their network’s abroad, so any difference in billing expenses or claims will become your responsibility. Private U.S. health plans rarely provide emergency medical air evacuation and repatriation benefits back to your home country. Finally, Medicare provides NO coverage outside the U.S. (see U.S, Passport for details).
Problem for Non – U.S. Citizens: Nationalized or government sponsored health plans rarely provide adequate medical coverage for illnesses or injuries sustained while traveling outside your home country. Extreme sports, hazardous activities, emergency medical air evacuation and repatriation are usually not covered under nationalized health insurance schemes.
